Continuing Our Journey to Be Green

In our last newsletter, we talked about the beginning of our process to become a “green” bank. We are now recycling ALL of our used paper, and because of a serious effort not to print everything or, at least to print on both sides of the paper, we have dramatically reduced the amount of paper we use. Our kitchen contains only recyclable paper products and we strongly encourage the use of non-disposable plates, cups and utensils. We’re turning off computers at night and lights that aren’t needed throughout the day. We’re offering our customers electronic statements, an idea that’s been extremely well received, with more people signing up all the time.
And we’d like to highlight a wonderful example of an organization in the community that has taken green to new heights. The Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation has built a new home, a structure that has received Platinum LEED Certification, the highest rating given by the U.S. Green Building Council. In doing this, they recycled 96% of their old building and used reclaimed, recycled and rapidly renewable materials in the building. And, best of all, they have reduced the amount of energy used in the building—45% less than in a conventional new building. They have maximized the use of natural light, minimized the use of water—and created a building that is absolutely beautiful. For more information, please visit www.jrc-evanston.org.
